As the story of 1984 progresses we learn that Winston is married. He was married to a woman named, Katharine for fifteen months until they parted ways. The Party has a rule where they don’t grant divorce so the couple have been separated for eleven years even though, on paper it says married. This means they live separate, but it is illegal to be in a relationship with someone else. When he was with Katharine he would nickname her, “ Human Soundtrack,” because she was very vague and her mind was empty so she repeat the same things. She was very tense and would stiffen whenever Winston tried to embrace her. At the times they did embraced it seem like she was trying so hard to push him away. They were basically strangers who were to put together to reproduce. Whenever, they did have sexual intercourse she would call it, “ Our duty to our Party.” She would even schedule the times it would take place, because she was determined to produce a child to further expand the community like the Party wanted. After trying, they realized they couldn’t have a child they started to become more distant from each other. They also felt uncomfortable with one another since their whole life they were celibate, because sex was a sin unless you were doing it to expand the population. The Party wanted more children so they can have more spies and warriors for them at their disposal. These were not really marriages more of a business arrangement and Winston wanted more than that.
Winston just wanted to feel some type of affection, and since he wasn’t feeling anything he cheated with an older lady. Even though, he felt bad he knew it was the best for them both to go separate ways.
