In every story there is a villain and underdog, in 1984 the villain is Big Brother and the Brotherhood organization are the underdogs. Big Brother is a symbol of the the highest rank and leader of their city. It’s a fictional character, that all the citizens of Oceania love and respect. Nobody knows whether he is real or not but they know he is the leader since there are posters plaster everywhere that say, “ Big Brother is Always Watching You.” The purpose of the posters is to install fear into the citizens to never break any laws since they will always be monitoring your actions and thoughts. The Brotherhood organization is the resistance force that plans on expanding and taking down the Party/Big Brother. There was also controversy whether the resistance was real since people only ever heard whispers and assumed it was a myth. The hopes of the Brotherhood is that the resistance will continue to grow and become a threat to the Party and overthrow them. The people in the resistance don’t get to know the other members, but they all know their purpose which is to spread corruption to weaken the Party. Their other goal is to make citizens aware of the true nature of the society. When the members agree to be apart of the Brotherhood they are also aware they are signing up to die. There is a high chance of theme being caught and capture so most of them commit suicide so the secret of the Brotherhood stays a secret. When Winston hears about the resistance force he becomes intrigued and wants to become a member. He starts to question the way the society is being runned and feels the Brotherhood is the only way he will know the truth of the past.
