In the story, 1984 by George Orwell it starts off with a paradox in the first sentence.
The words, “Bright” and “Cold” gives off two different effects to the audience. Bright makes me think of a warm, fuzzy, and happy story. Cold makes me think of gloomy, torture, and depressing setting. It gives a glimpse that not everything is black and white as we see. At first everything will seem all perfect, but then all those black and gray parts will show. The things we thought were going well will eventually just be revealed it was all a lie that the white parts were covering the ugly black parts the whole time. Another thing, that stood out to me was the cover page. Most cover pages are colorful and filled with symbols that lead up to the theme, but 1984 is way different compared to the usual ones. It is just a plain white background with a light blue eye. The cover page alone tells me that the story will be based on something with little thoughts and the characters will be very simple. The image of the light blue eye can symbolize the characters opening their eyes to things they were dumbly blindly to. To add on, I think the eye will represent something to do with watching over someone since not only is that the purpose of it to view, but there is only one eye which can show the focus on one object. I couldn’t continue reading until I got some more answers about the cover page. Most people I asked didn’t seem to care to analyze the cover, so I research different cover pages of 1984. One thing I noticed in all covers was the eyeball, which shows that it's a huge significance to the story.
