My overall thoughts of the book 1984, it was very dark and twisted. Almost every character betrayed each other, and in the end it shows Winston chooses himself. I would like to think there are people we can trust and rely on to be there for us. Now I am conflicted on how to see other people, because what if people are hiding who they really are. For example, Winston kept telling himself he hasn’t betrayed Julia, but in the end he even surprised himself. Does this mean everyone is going through life wearing a mask? I started to ask myself this ever since reading that scene of betrayal. Orwell’s style of writing leaves readers asking themselves questions like these. His whole purpose of the book was not to say that this is what are society is, but where its leading towards if we don’t stop it. In my opinion, I don’t want to be a zombie walking through life feeling nothing. Life would feel so empty if we lost art, poems, music, dance, and emotions. Without it we would have anything to admire or bond with that forms our relationships. I think the book was more of an awareness to appreciate all the little things we have, because despite their size they make up a huge part of us. I hope after reading this book people will start to appreciate literature and art. Many people are becoming so attached with technology they don’t take the time to go see a play or an art museum, which most of them are free to attend. W e must take a moment to appreciate the things around us, because who knows it might be replaced in the future. Sometimes we just need to go live life, before someone tries to take it.
