The beginning of the story of, 1984 we are introduced to the main character Winston Smith who is a thirty nine year old man who lives alone. He is apart of the ruling class, however his life is still under the Party’s political control. He works in the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth to rewrite history according to the Party’s needs. The Ministry of Truth is ironic since the sole purpose is to make lies of the past. It deals with alternating the history, news, art, and education to the way the Party wants it to be remembered for. When I first heard of the Ministry of Truth I automatically thought it had something to do with a foundation or church where you would confess your sins. Instead, this ministry is a place where corruption is occurring and even though this isn’t as bad as a law being broken it is taking away the memories. The memories that we have the right to know and research. It’s like if someone were to come in and erase something that had special value to you.The depressing part is that none of the citizens seem to know the purpose of the Ministry of Truth or tend to care of their evil doing. In addition, not only does this form of living take our history away it also doesn’t allow you to have your own thoughts. It is a crime to have any emotions or dreams, because it can lead to people having ideas which the Party doesn’t want. If people starting thinking they might have ideas of overthrowing the Party. To make sure they don’t commit this crime they have a Thought Police. This secret police punishes people who commit crimes by having thoughts that aren’t approved by the Party.
