Throughout, the book of 1984 Winston watches his surroundings and tries not to have any thoughts since he knows someone is always watching. In every household there is a device known as a telescreen that watches everything that happens in your household. This device can even detect when you are having a thought and reports it to the thought police. You can’t even move the telescreen more than thirty minutes if not it will alert the Party that something is occuring. The telescreen is basically a security camera so the Party can watch your every move. The only perk I can see from this machinery is that it alert you if anyone tries to steal or break inside the house. Even with that perk it is still an invasion of personal privacy and the people should be trusted to have some privacy. In my opinion, I think when you tell people not to do something it only makes them want to do it more. Which is what probably led Winston to break the law of owning a journal. A journal is secretive and their used for reporting information that might be important. So without a doubt that in this society they have made journals as a negative thing. Winston was having all these mixed emotions and thoughts in his mind he knew he had to get rid of so he won’t be caught by the thought police. So he gets a journal so he can write it all out and his mind will be empty of thoughts. When he starts to write in his journal he becomes extra cautious of the telescreen that it doesn’t sense anything. He feels the need to write, because he can’t stop thinking of his past wrongdoings and he starts to feel haunted by them.
