In the beginning, of the story Frankenstein author Mary Shelley sets up a gloomy story by introducing four letters. Each letter is set up differently they are letters from Robert Walton to his beloved sister Mrs. Saville. In the first letter he starts of with saying, “ You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprize which you have regarded with such evil forebodings.” Most letters during this time period are quite formal and not affectionate like the basic format today of , “ My dearest” or “My beloved”. However when I read this it made me a little confused and I had to reread it a couple of times to understand the meaning. Robert is merely informing his sister that the journey she thought was dangerous for him to take is actually going smoothly and he continues the letter about his other journeys and how he is always willing to do whatever it takes to have a successful outcome. The next letter he talks about him having no friends and feeling lonely with nobody to talk to. All he craves is some human company to talk to someone and this remind me of the book 1984 and how Robert wouldn’t be able to survive that government system. The following letter is short and discusses there is danger ahead and hopes nothing happens to them. The last letter is lengthy and is about how the crew has saved this human like creature they found floating at sea. This creature is very ill and different when around people except Robert. Robert feels like he has this connection with him that can only be described as brotherhood since they have similar opinions. After months of feeling alone in his own thoughts he had someone to finally share them with.
To begin with, as a perspective reader, I loved how you started your blog off by including that the “author Mary Shelley sets up a gloomy story.” Therefore, I came to believe that the Literary Era illustrated in Frankenstein was the Gothic Era. Hence, the reason why I considered it to be the Gothic Era was for the reason you had included words such as “gloomy” and “evil forebodings.” These words indicate a sense of everything being dark, gloomy, and depressing. After, reading your blog it made me realize that both the story Frankenstein and the Gothic Era have many similarities. All in all, I believe that a few ways you could improve your blog is by including more analysis with more depth to it and use some imagery as well.
