In the The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne he sets in a romanticism era. The main character is being described by speactors before she even appears in the book. They describe Hester Prynne character as “rotundity” and “boldness” before she committed the sinful act of adultery. Once she makes her appearance from the prison doors she is seen as “ Natural dignity and force of character.” It is seen like Hester is leaving the prison, because she chooses to like if it is her own free will of action. At first, everyone assumes she is clenching to the infant because she is ashamed of what is on her clothes. Instead she seemed proud to show it off and she did so with such elegance. The letter A on her clothes is described as something beautiful instead of negative like how it supposed to symbolize. The letter is described as “Elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread ..it was so artistically done and gorgeous luxuriance of fancy.”The symbol is supposed to symbolize the negative act she did and so everyone is aware of what she has done but when they see it alot of people look at it as beautiful and acceptance even though that was not the context it was supposed to be.
