Another character with main importance is Roger Chillingworth. He is a very vague character who also happens to be the husband of Hester whom she cheated on with another man. At first he is introduced as a wise and intelligent scholar with skills unlike no other. He is known for his remedies and expertise on what roots to grab for medicinal purposes. His actions are considered diabolic throughout the story since he is pretending to be someone he is not and torturing Dimmesdale. He is motivated by vengeance and betrayal he felt from Hester. She was so beautiful and young when they married he felt so lucky but once he found out the news he buried himself into his books which led to thirst of vengeance. I think it quite ironic that his last name has the word “Chilling” like he is too cold hearted to even care for others. He has no concern for others feelings only his science and its information. His hypothesis is that corruption of the body leads to the corruption of the soul so his prods at Dimmesdale. I think in some odd twisted way Roger still loves Hester, but knows that he was not enough for her. She chose someone else so he figured he hurt the other guy maybe then giving him a chance.
