In the third chapter of The Scarlet Letter , a lot of chaos is going on but almost everyone’s focus is on Hester. Instead of killing Hester for her sins of adultery they decided she would just be shamed by the the townsfolk and stand on the platform for like three hours. They do this in hopes she will confess who the father is of the child she conceived out of wedlock. If she gave up his name the punishments won’t be as bad for her and she might even get the letter A rid of. Shockingly, Hester stands her ground and says she will “Never give up his name.” She rather face the consequences than expose his name. She said her daughter will never have a father who is living, which shows the independent side that she possesses. Many women today decide not to include the father in their children's life, either to “protect” them so they may continue living their dreams or that they feel the father wasn’t worthy to be in the child’s life. In my opinion, I don’t think Hester is protecting the father she is taking care of her child and their future. Keeping him away the daughter will never feel the pain of her father being exiled and her mother is already a symbol of sin so its better to have one than two parents hated.
