Another topic is touched upon, although it is hidden unless analysis further in the story. The topic is about whether women and men are treated equally. Even in the mid 17th century of the story of the Scarlet Letter, this topic is touched upon and the fight for the equality is still going on till this very day. The only thing us as women are asking for is not at all unreasonable, all we ask is to secure women an equal participation with men in the various trades, professions, and commerce. I feel that in the story Hester was shamed even more since she is a women and her gender lowers her status. They most likely used her as an example to other women so they won’t disobey another man again. Even throughout the story all the people with high authority and control are men not women. If the roles were switched in this situation they would most likely not even make it a public thing of shame like they did with Hester. Even the title itself has a feminine tone to it, Scarlet. When I hear the name Scarlet I think of a women in red with confidence which describes Hester perfectly.
